Information About Om Mani Padme Hum

Om Mani Padme Hum (Sanskrit: ओं मणिपद्मे हूं) is the six-syllabled Sanskrit mantra particularly associated with the four-armed Shadakshari form of Avalokiteshvara (Tibetan Chenrezig, Chinese Guanyin), the bodhisattva of compassion. Mani means "jewel" or "bead" and Padma means "the lotus flower", the Buddhist Sacred Flower. It is commonly carved onto rocks or written on paper which is inserted into prayer wheels, said to increase the mantra's effects.

Om mani padme hum sansript writing

Pronounciation: Om (ohm) - Ma (mah) - Ni (nee) - Pad (pahd) - Me (may) - Hum (hum)

Om Mani Padme Hum can not really be translated into a simple phrase or sentence, but the closest translation is "Om! the jewel in the lotus, hum!". This mantra is one of the most widely used of all Buddhist mantras, especially in Tibet and in surrounding countries of the Far East. It is also one of the most sacred Buddhist mantra or verbal formulas; it is said that all the teachings of the Buddha are contained within it. Not only is every syllable said to have a secret power of producing a definite result, but the whole invocation has a number of meanings. When properly pronounced or changed, it produces different results, differing from the others according to the intonation and will given to the formula and its syllables. This mystic sentence above all refers to the indissoluble union between man and the universe, and thus conveys "I am in thee and thou art in me."

"Buddha of great compassion, hold me fast in your compassion. From time without beginning, beings have wandered in samsara, Undergoing unendurable suffering. They have no other protector than you. Please bless them that they may achieve the omniscient state of buddhahood.

With the power of evil karma gathered from beginningless time, Sentient beings, through the force of anger, are born as hell beings and experience the suffering of heat and cold. May they all be born in your presence, perfect deity." --The Meditation and Recitation of Four-Armed Chenresig

"Om Mani Padme Hum, mean that in dependence on the practice which is in indivisible union of method and wisdom, you can transform your impure body, speech and mind into the pure body, speech, and mind of a Buddha." --The Dalai Lama
